Conversion Rate

Also known as: CVR

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors or clicks that complete a goal, such as a purchase, a sign-up or a form submission. It shows how well your site or ad turns interest into action.

Formula
Conversion rate = Conversions ÷ Visitors (or sessions, or clicks) × 100

Example: If 10,000 sessions produce 320 conversions, your conversion rate is 3.2%.

Why Conversion Rate matters

Conversion rate is the lever that makes all your other traffic work harder. Doubling your conversion rate gives you the same results from the same traffic, which is often cheaper than doubling traffic.

The denominator changes by tool. In GA4 the metric is reported as key event rate and can be based on sessions or on users. In ad platforms it is usually conversions divided by clicks. Always check which one you are looking at before comparing numbers.

How to read it

There is no universal benchmark. Conversion rate varies by industry, traffic source, device, price point and what counts as a conversion, so compare against your own history and against like-for-like segments.

Look at it by channel and device. A healthy overall rate can hide a mobile experience or a traffic source that converts poorly.

How to improve it

  • Make the offer and the next step obvious above the fold.
  • Cut form fields and checkout steps to the minimum needed.
  • Speed up pages, especially on mobile.
  • Add proof near the decision point, such as reviews, case studies and guarantees.
  • Test one change at a time so you know what moved the number.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing rates that use different denominators, such as sessions versus clicks.
  • Optimizing for a high rate on a tiny sample.
  • Counting low-value actions as conversions and inflating the number.
  • Ignoring traffic quality, since a higher rate from a narrow audience may bring fewer total conversions.
