Dead Clicks

Also known as: Unresponsive clicks

A dead click is a click or tap on an element where nothing happens. Microsoft Clarity flags these when a visitor clicks something and the page does not respond.

Why Dead Clicks matters

Dead clicks show where your page looks interactive but is not. Visitors expect images, labels, icons or text to be clickable, and when they are not, people get confused and may leave.

They also expose real bugs, such as buttons that fail to respond or slow scripts, and they often come before rage clicks, when frustrated visitors click the same spot again and again.

How to read it

Fewer is better, especially on pages where visitors need to take an action, such as sign-up, pricing and checkout. There is no universal target, so use your own baseline and look at the elements receiving the most dead clicks.

Not every dead click is a problem. Some come from visitors simply testing an element. Watch the session recordings to see whether people were actually blocked.

How to improve it

  • Make elements that attract clicks actually clickable, such as images that visitors expect to enlarge.
  • Remove styling that makes plain text look like a link or a button.
  • Fix buttons and scripts that fail to respond, and speed up slow interactions.
  • Add feedback such as loading states so people can see that a click worked.
  • Recheck the page after each change to confirm dead clicks drop.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring them because they do not show as errors.
  • Assuming every dead click is a bug without watching recordings.
  • Checking only desktop when the problem happens on mobile taps.
  • Treating them as the same as rage clicks, which show stronger frustration.
