Win Rate

Also known as: Deal win rate, Close rate

Win rate is the percentage of sales opportunities that you close as won, out of all the opportunities that reached a final outcome, won or lost.

Formula
Win rate = Deals won ÷ (Deals won + Deals lost) × 100

Example: If you won 12 deals and lost 28 in a quarter, your win rate is 12 ÷ 40 = 30%.

Why Win Rate matters

Win rate shows how well your sales process turns opportunities into customers. A small change in win rate has a big effect on revenue without needing any extra leads.

It also links marketing and sales. If cost per lead is low but win rate is poor, the leads may be the wrong fit, or the sales process may need work.

How to read it

There is no universal target. Win rates depend on deal size, sales cycle and how well qualified your leads are. Compare against your own history and by lead source, deal size and sales rep.

Only count deals that have reached a final outcome. Open deals still in progress should be left out until they are won or lost.

How to improve it

  • Qualify leads earlier so effort goes to deals that can close.
  • Review lost deals to find the most common reasons.
  • Improve follow-up speed and consistency after the first contact.
  • Focus marketing on lead sources with the best win rate, not only the most leads.
  • Share what winning deals have in common with the whole team.

Common mistakes

  • Counting open deals as losses or wins.
  • Mixing different deal sizes or products in one average.
  • Judging marketing channels by lead volume without checking win rate.
  • Ignoring how long deals take to close.
