Google Analytics 4

Key Events

Also known as: Conversions (GA4), Key event count

Key events are the actions on your site or app that you mark as important to your business, such as a purchase, a sign-up or a demo request. In Google Analytics 4 they replaced what used to be called conversions.

Why Key Events matters

Traffic only matters if it leads somewhere. Key events are how you tell GA4 what success looks like, so every report can show which channels, campaigns and pages produce it.

They are also the base for conversion-based metrics and for importing goals into advertising platforms, so a clear and accurate set of key events improves both your analysis and your ad optimization.

How to read it

Keep the list short and meaningful. A handful of events that reflect real business outcomes is more useful than dozens of minor actions.

Check that each key event fires once per real action and not on page reloads or duplicate clicks, since inflated counts make every downstream number unreliable.

How to improve it

  • Mark only the actions that matter to the business, such as purchases and qualified leads.
  • Test each event after setting it up to be sure it fires correctly and only once.
  • Use clear, consistent event names so reports stay readable.
  • Review key events by channel and landing page to find what drives them.

Common mistakes

  • Marking every small interaction as a key event.
  • Not testing events and counting duplicates.
  • Confusing GA4 key events with conversions reported inside an ad platform, which use different attribution.
  • Changing which events are key events without noting the date, which breaks comparisons over time.
