Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)

Also known as: CPA, Cost per conversion

Cost per acquisition (CPA) is the average amount you spend on advertising to get one conversion, such as a sale, a lead or a sign-up. It is your total ad cost divided by the number of conversions.

Formula
CPA = Total ad cost ÷ Conversions

Example: If you spend $2,000 and get 40 conversions, your CPA is $50.

Why Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) matters

CPA is the number that connects spending to results. It tells you what each customer or lead really costs, so you can compare it with what that customer is worth and decide whether a campaign is worth running.

CPA, CPC and conversion rate are linked: CPA equals CPC divided by conversion rate. That means you can lower CPA either by paying less per click or by converting more of the clicks you get.

How to read it

A good CPA is one that leaves you profitable. Compare it with the profit or lifetime value of a conversion, not with a generic benchmark. A CPA of $50 is excellent for a $500 sale and a loss for a $30 one.

Make sure a conversion means the same thing everywhere you measure it. If one platform counts form views and another counts completed purchases, their CPAs cannot be compared.

How to improve it

  • Set a target CPA based on margin or lifetime value and manage campaigns against it.
  • Raise conversion rate by tightening the offer and speeding up the landing page and checkout or form.
  • Cut spend on keywords, audiences and placements with a CPA well above target.
  • Make sure only meaningful conversions are tracked, so optimization is not driven by low-value actions.

Common mistakes

  • Judging CPA without comparing it to what a customer is worth.
  • Counting different actions as conversions on different platforms.
  • Double counting the same conversion across platforms.
  • Ignoring that some conversions arrive days after the click.
