Cost Per Click (CPC)

Also known as: CPC

Cost per click (CPC) is the average amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad. It is your total ad cost divided by the number of clicks.

Formula
CPC = Total ad cost ÷ Clicks

Example: If you spend $500 and get 250 clicks, your CPC is $2.00.

Why Cost Per Click (CPC) matters

CPC is the price of a visit. Along with conversion rate, it decides how much each lead or sale costs you, so even a small rise in CPC can make a profitable campaign unprofitable.

In auction-based platforms such as Google Ads you set a maximum CPC bid, and the average CPC you actually pay is often lower than that maximum. Competition, ad quality, audience and timing all move it.

How to read it

CPC varies enormously by industry, keyword, audience, platform and country, so there is no single good figure. Compare against your own history and against the value of a click: a high CPC is fine if those clicks convert at a high rate and the sale is worth it.

The number to watch alongside CPC is cost per acquisition, which shows what you pay for the result you actually want.

How to improve it

  • Improve ad relevance and click-through rate, since platforms often reward better ads with lower costs.
  • Add negative keywords and exclude audiences that click but never convert.
  • Make sure landing pages match the ad so that quality scores and conversion rates hold up.
  • Test bidding strategies and schedules against your target cost per acquisition, not CPC alone.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the lowest CPC instead of the lowest cost per conversion.
  • Comparing CPC across platforms with different audiences and intent.
  • Ignoring that a cheap click from the wrong audience still costs money.
  • Reading CPC on a very small number of clicks.
