Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Also known as: CTR

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of impressions that turn into clicks. It shows how often people who see your search result or ad actually choose to click it.

Formula
CTR = Clicks ÷ Impressions × 100

Example: If your listing was shown 2,500 times and got 75 clicks, your CTR is 3%.

Why Click-Through Rate (CTR) matters

CTR tells you whether your title, snippet or ad copy earns the click once someone sees it. In Google Search Console it shows how appealing your result is at the position it ranks. In ad platforms such as Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads and Reddit Ads it shows how well your creative and targeting resonate with the audience.

It also affects cost. Ad platforms such as Google Ads factor expected CTR into ad quality, which can influence how much you pay per click. In search, a low CTR on a page that already ranks well is one of the cheapest wins available, because you do not need to rank higher to get more traffic.

How to read it

CTR varies a lot by position, query intent, device and ad format, so there is no single target to aim for. In Search Console, compare pages against others at a similar average position: a page in the top three with a low CTR usually has a weak title or snippet. For ads, compare against your own past campaigns and against the same placement and audience.

Be careful with small samples. A CTR calculated from a few dozen impressions can swing wildly and means little.

How to improve it

  • Write titles and meta descriptions that match what the searcher is actually looking for, and state the benefit clearly.
  • In Search Console, find queries and pages that rank on page one but have a CTR below similar pages, and rewrite those first.
  • Test ad headlines and creative one change at a time so you know what moved the number.
  • Tighten audience and keyword targeting so your ads are shown to people who actually want what you offer.
  • Use the extra ad formats your platform offers, such as sitelinks or other assets, to take up more room and give people more reasons to click.

Common mistakes

  • Judging CTR without looking at average position.
  • Chasing clicks with misleading titles or ads, which raises CTR but hurts bounce rate and conversions.
  • Reading CTR on a handful of impressions.
  • Treating Search Console CTR and ad platform CTR as the same thing. They come from different systems and measure different results.
