Impressions

An impression is counted each time your page appears in search results or your ad is shown to someone. It measures how often you were visible, not how often anyone clicked.

Why Impressions matters

Impressions are the top of the funnel for search and ads. Before anyone can click, visit or buy, they have to see you, so impressions show your potential reach.

On their own they say little about success. Their value comes from pairing them with clicks (click-through rate), position in search results and cost (CPM), which together show whether the visibility you are getting is turning into traffic and whether you are paying a fair price for it.

How to read it

Look at the trend and the context. Rising impressions with falling clicks usually means you are showing up for more searches or audiences but your title, snippet or creative is not earning the click. Falling impressions can mean lost rankings, reduced budget, a narrower audience or seasonal demand.

The definition varies by platform. Search Console, Google Ads and social ad platforms each decide when an impression is counted, so avoid adding impressions from different sources together.

How to improve it

  • In search, target more relevant queries and improve pages that rank just off page one, since moving up increases impressions.
  • In ads, widen audiences or budgets only where your click-through rate and conversions hold up.
  • Compare impressions with clicks to find results that are seen often but rarely clicked, and rewrite those first.
  • Check for indexing or targeting problems if impressions drop suddenly.

Common mistakes

  • Treating impressions as visits or as proof of interest.
  • Adding impressions from Search Console and from ad platforms into one total.
  • Chasing impressions with broad targeting that brings the wrong audience.
  • Ignoring seasonality when comparing periods.
