Average View Duration

Also known as: AVD

Average view duration is the average amount of time viewers spend watching a video each time they view it. YouTube reports it alongside the average percentage of the video that was viewed.

Formula
Average view duration = Total watch time ÷ Number of views

Example: If a video earned 600 hours of watch time from 7,200 views, the average view duration is 5 minutes.

Why Average View Duration matters

It shows how well a video holds attention. Total watch time can grow just because a video gets many views, while average view duration tells you whether the people who click actually stay.

It also helps you compare videos of different lengths, especially when read next to the percentage of the video watched. A two minute average on a three minute video is a very different story from two minutes on a thirty minute one.

How to read it

There is no universal target. Longer videos naturally have longer averages but lower percentages, so compare videos of similar length and format, and look at the audience retention graph to see where viewers leave.

A sharp drop in the first seconds usually points to a mismatch between the title or thumbnail and the opening of the video.

How to improve it

  • State the main point or promise within the first seconds.
  • Use the retention graph to find where viewers drop off and fix those moments.
  • Cut sections that repeat or delay the point.
  • Make sure titles and thumbnails match what the video delivers.
  • Use pacing changes, visuals and chapters to keep people watching.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing average view duration between videos of very different length.
  • Ignoring the percentage of the video viewed.
  • Adding filler to make a video longer without making it better.
  • Using misleading thumbnails that bring viewers who leave right away.
