Referring Domains

Also known as: Linking domains, Linking websites

Referring domains are the unique websites that link to your site. A site that links to you many times still counts as one referring domain.

Why Referring Domains matters

The number of different sites linking to you is usually a better sign of authority than the total number of links. Fifty links from one site tell search engines much less than one link each from fifty different relevant sites.

Ahrefs also uses the strength and number of linking websites in metrics such as Domain Rating and Keyword Difficulty, so growing referring domains tends to improve those as well.

How to read it

Compare your count with the sites ranking for the terms you want to win. If top pages have far more referring domains than yours, it helps explain why they rank higher.

Look at quality and relevance, not just the number. A handful of links from respected sites in your field is worth more than hundreds from low-quality or unrelated ones.

How to improve it

  • Create content that others want to cite, such as original data, tools and detailed guides.
  • Reach out to relevant sites that already cover your topic.
  • Turn unlinked brand mentions into links.
  • Contribute expert input to reputable publications.
  • Track lost referring domains and win back important ones.

Common mistakes

  • Counting backlinks instead of unique referring domains.
  • Buying links or using link schemes, which can lead to penalties.
  • Chasing quantity over relevance.
  • Not monitoring which domains stop linking to you.
