Keyword Difficulty (KD)

Also known as: KD, SEO difficulty

Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score from 0 to 100 that estimates how hard it is to rank in the top results for a search term. In Ahrefs, it is based on the number of websites linking to the pages that currently rank.

Why Keyword Difficulty (KD) matters

KD helps you choose which keywords to go after. It lets you separate terms you can realistically win soon from terms that would take a large investment in content and links.

Pairing it with search volume and business relevance gives a more useful picture. A keyword with modest volume and low difficulty that matches what you sell is often a better first target than a high volume, high difficulty term.

How to read it

Lower scores are easier. What counts as achievable depends on the strength of your own site, so compare a keyword KD with the strength of your site, for example your domain rating.

Each SEO tool calculates difficulty differently, so scores from different tools are not comparable. Treat KD as a guide, and check the actual search results to see who ranks and how strong their pages are.

How to improve it

  • Start with low and medium difficulty keywords that match your products.
  • Build topical depth with several linked pages around a subject.
  • Earn links to the pages targeting harder keywords.
  • Look at the current top results to see what they cover that you do not.

Common mistakes

  • Treating KD as a precise forecast of how long ranking will take.
  • Comparing scores between different tools.
  • Ignoring search intent and business relevance.
  • Only targeting very hard, high volume terms.
